The Scars of the Golden City

The Scars of the Golden City

Written by: Jose Angelo Lorenzo S. Gomos

Cagayan de Oro, a city currently in the process for industrialization and increasing urbanization; a city of more than half a million people; a city of bloom, in blossom, and in boom; the city of golden friendship; the melting pot of Northern Mindanao. Cagayan de Oro, as we all know it, is a highly urbanized and progressive city. It obtains every quality an industrialized city has. It comprises of proud and humble citizens who are in contentment in living in our city’s area. It is a city that equips virtuous resiliency amidst every disaster that come strikingly unexpected. It is a city filled with dreams and desires the people from the nearby provinces eagerly hope to achieve. Cagayan de Oro is a city of splendor, a city of big opportunities and high expectations. Separated by a wide and winding river that contributes to the city’s essential wonder, Cagayan de Oro is a prosperous and economically stabilized place with an abundance of natural resources and bountiful gifts of nature. It is a city of entertainment and a city of peace; a city where crowds of people would enjoy their everyday lifestyle. Cagayan de Oro is a city of equality where there is an endless harmony and understanding among all its citizens with different social status. It is a city highly enriched with God’s grace and a city poured with the immense and patriotic Filipino pride. It is a city of growing prosperity, an evidence of the current progression and augmentation of a better and bright Philippines. Above all, it is the golden city of Northern Mindanao.

In spite of its rich abundance and increasing industrialization, Cagayan de Oro could not avoid its inevitable wounds which in turn eventually result into its obvious scars. The city might be saturated with glory, but it is vulnerable to its scars. The city’s scars are apparently its problems. Most commonly, the city has suffered with its social problems that eventually destroyed the city’s reputation and stained its magnificence with notoriety. Cagayan de Oro could still be labeled as the golden city of Northern Mindanao, but the purity of its radiance has long since been fading up until now. Caused by its unavoidable and destructive social problems, the city could not rise towards its highest height nor fathom under its deepest depths.

All cities have their own social problems. The main objective of this composition is to cite three of the most eminent and dominant social problems revolving within and around our city. As a Kagay-anon myself, I am vigilant enough to notice the most dominating and superior social problems our city has which contribute further to scratch our city’s unblemished glory and leave scars on it. As a Filipino, I am obligated to be informed about what caused these social problems to happen. As a student of Development Communication, I am entitled and encouraged to contribute what I am most capable of within my personal capacity in order to introduce changes to come up with a satisfying and firm solution to solve these degrading problems. As an Atenean, I am influenced to become a person for others and to do all things for the greater glory of God.

There are countless of social problems our city is presently experiencing. It promotes hardships and difficulties to all its citizens. Most of them are caused by the citizen’s careless and insensitive character. Some of them are evidences of the people’s indolence. These social problems should not be tolerated at all yet they are still degrading and destroying our city up to this date. In my personal view, the social problems which I considered most eminent are the problems of pollution, the beggars in the city, and the unruly and careless drivers. These three social problems cause great difficulty to the city’s citizens and are main hindrances and barriers towards the city’s complete and full industrialization.

Pollution

Whenever I go to school from my home and as I am riding a jeepney, I am easily prompted to cover my nose and mouth with my handkerchief whenever the jeepney starts to pass by on the Marcos Bridge. I routinely do this. Every time I pass by the Marcos bridge, I could not help but notice the brewing smokes and fumes emanating from the numerous vehicles and means of transportation passing by the bridge. The air will be filled with thick smoke even when it is early in daytime. Sometimes, the road wouldn’t be clear enough to be seen because of the smokes and fumes covering it. The wind carries the smoke and it would entirely affect everyone passing by the Marcos Bridge and most of the people living in our city. The smokes and fumes do not only appear on the city’s bridge (as I go to school everyday, I always notice thick smokes and fumes revolving around the bridge from the vehicles and transportations that pass by it), their unpleasant presence which ultimately produces an odor of stench is also found in most areas of our city. The smokes and fumes are two of the main contributors to our city’s pollution.

Aside from the smokes and fumes within our city, trashes are also seen everywhere. They are found on roads, inside schools, inside the parks of our city, inside our malls, outside the city hall, and on walkways. They are littered everywhere and their unsanitary presence is found in all areas within our city. People carelessly throw their garbage and trash anywhere without disciplining themselves to throw them properly in garbage cans and trash containers. Trashes are also littered outside the steps of our church. Even in the holiest places of our city, they are scattered and disseminated. Trashes are also found floating in our river. It is a very unpleasant and terrible sight to see our river flooded with trashes. The people aimlessly throw their trashes everywhere in the city which makes our city smell and look bad. This just does not bring an unsanitary feel to our city; it degrades the people’s social values by being untidy, indolent, and unclean.

Pollution is evident in our city today. Because of this, our city is highly and overwhelmingly affected and we would have to pay the price. When we pollute our city, we destroy our environment. When we destroy our environment, we would become wholly defenseless, weak, and vulnerable to natural calamities, deadly diseases, and unexpected environmental disasters. Pollution affects all of us in every way – it can create harmful effects to our health, it can immobilize us when natural calamities strike and it can lead to our city’s environmental ruin.  The evidence of the pollution of our city also depicts and exploits how careless and negligent we are in our concern for our city. Our city is our home. It is the place where we live in. We thrive as common citizens in our city as we are familiar to the place. In turn, we must cooperate to maintain our city’s cleanliness and prevent it from its further damaging. We must stop our city’s pollution before the infliction of its terrifying result to all our city’s citizens becomes imminent and apparent.

As a student of Development Communication, I could contribute simple yet meaningful and productive acts to lessen our city’s growing pollution. There are multiple cleanliness drives with an agenda to help eradicate our city’s pollution and there are environmental awareness programs available in our school or in our community that could prevent our city’s pollution from its multiplication and further production. As a Development Communicator, I am capable of enhancing my skills and abilities in communication to communicate, get in touch, and encourage people to join environment-related clubs and organizations that would practice some fulfilling and fruitful activities for our environment and for the environment of our city. I could also inform the Department of Environment and National Resources about our city’s environmental situation and ask for their assistance and guidance to start a cleaning program in our city that would benefit its environment. If we all become cooperative with each other to stop our city’s harmful pollution and engage into activities that are advantageous to our environment, then our city’s growing pollution could possibly cease.

If we all are vigilant and conscious enough to become aware of our city’s environment, then the solution to our city’s problem could be made possible. We must obtain the right and correct virtues that all people need. If we all truly love our city, then we must give proper concern to its cleanliness and not engage into negligent reluctance and nonchalance by throwing all our trashes and wastes everywhere in our city. Our city serves as our home and we are obligated to maintain its cleanliness. Are we contented to live in a dirty, polluted, and chaotic city? If we do not like our city to be dirty, then we must bond together in cooperation with each other to maintain its cleanliness.

Beggars in the City

In Divisoria, the heart of the city of Cagayan de Oro, there are countless of beggars begging for money. There was one friend of mine who was begged for money by a child beggar and when the friend of mine gave the child beggar food instead of money, the child beggar refused to accept it. Why do they prefer money over food? Money cannot give them energy nor nourishment. They might have some hidden agenda for their preference of money over food. My point is that there are more than a hundred beggars in our city. Most of them beg for money more than they beg for food. There are fragile and subtle beggars – they are the ones who are blind, deaf, mute, crippled, elderly or limp; and they are more worthy to be pitied than those who are evidently healthy and active. The fragile and subtle beggars accept food more than they accept the money, which is a good thing for them because their preference of food more than money proves that they are really sickly and their sickness or illness is a hindrance to seek food for their own selves.

Most beggars in the city are not really sickly. Most of them are healthy and are active. They always ask for money and prefer to receive money over food. Their common activity is a problem to them as well as it is a problem to our city. It affects the tourism in our city and it decreases the number of tourists staying in our city. The beggars beg from foreign visitors which would change their perception and view in regards to our city; to them, it proves how impoverished some of the people living in our city are. Other beggars, out of sheer desperation for money, would engage into heinous crimes to obtain what they want. Some beggars would steal and commit murder to some of the local citizens living in our city. Even in churches, there are beggars who would snatch other people’s belongings and they would steal them for their own. This is one negative aspect our city experiences. It has a high crime rate due to illegal acts done by desperate people below the poverty line.

There is the existence of the poverty cycle in our country. The poverty cycle exemplifies how the beggars in our country live all throughout their impoverished and unfair lives. The poverty cycle illustrates and indicates the explanation of how and why poverty is eminent in our city and our country and why numerous people are plunged deep below the poverty line. The cycle begins with the child rearing. When the poor and impoverished parents fail to support and rear their own child, there will be a less chance that the child attains a primary education. When the child fails to attain a primary education, the child can never proceed onwards with a decent higher education. When the child cannot finish his higher education, and when the child grows up to become a fully grown person, the child will not experience entering into employment. When he does not enter into employment, he suffers with a financial loss because he cannot receive his personal salaries without being properly and appropriately employed. When he does not have salaries to support himself in financial aspects, there is a big chance that he will fail to live a life of sustenance, abundance, and contentment. When he does not have an ordinary life to support himself, he will become like his parents who are already poor and will stay impoverished for the rest of his life. And the cycle continues to revolve.

The poverty cycle is mainly happening and ongoing in our country nowadays. It is even happening in our city also. This explains why there are plenty of beggars in town. When the poverty cycle does not stop in circling, there will be more people who will be victimized by the cycle as the generations move on. As a student of Development Communication, there is one way to stop the uprising of this problem in our city – to break the poverty cycle and finally put an end to it! I can participate in activities that would help educate the less fortunate for a brighter tomorrow and for their hopeful future. In my college course, there will be plenty of activities that will be offered to us that would train and teach us on how to break the poverty cycle. In every activity that will be given to us, I will give my full support for it and contribute willingly to stop the poverty cycle from its vicious flow.

There was one teacher whom I had in high school when I was still in Kong Hua School and during his class, he taught us several insights and lessons that we could use later on in life. One lesson he taught us was that when we happen to encounter beggars (whether they are sickly or healthy), the proper way to help them when they beg for their need is to give them food whether they like it or not. Food is way better than money because it nourishes them and gives them satisfaction in their appetite and hunger. When we give them money, there will be chances that they will just spend it on useless things or would even engage into illegal crimes through the use of it. With money, they might buy dangerous items or tools as weapons to create heinous crimes. Food is the best gift to be given to them. Whenever one encounters a helpless beggar in dire need, one must give him food instead of money when one is available to give a food for the beggar. It will be helpful for the giver and for the beggar more than one will ever know.

Unruly and Careless Drivers

Traffic is always jamming here in our city. Everyday, we experience all sorts of traffic: traffics caused by accidence, traffics caused by inappropriate driving, traffics caused by negligence, and traffics caused by the drivers disobeying the signs and signals posted on our streets and roads. The roots of all these traffics are the unruliness and the carelessness of the nonchalant and disobedient drivers within our city. We experience traffic jams because there are accidence caused by drivers who could not even watch where they are driving, disobeying the rules and regulations on the roads, and not following the proper signs and signals. Because of traffic, people could not arrive early or on time to their time schedule of where they are going. Traffic could also result into more pollution in our city’s environment.

There are numerous drivers in our city who are undisciplined and despicable. Subsequently, they could not follow even the simplest and easiest of instructions. They are not even afraid or intimidated by the traffic enforcers who are formally doing their job to maintain and sustain an organized and systematic flow of vehicles on the road. As a citizen of this city, I will practice in obedience and consciousness to obey the rules and regulations on the roads and appropriately follow the signs and signals in the streets in order to maintain a systematic and organized flow of vehicles by starting with myself. As a student of Development Communication, I will communicate to others to do the same. It is not an easy task and it requires a herculean effort, but I know that it is possible to happen. By starting with myself, I can influence and encourage others to follow ethical virtues even when driving. I can request for the government to inform the traffic enforcers to take their job seriously and become keen on noticing the unruly and careless drivers and give them the rightful and legitimate punishment they are accountable for and of which they worthily deserve. All this can help to provide a solution to the increasing traffic problem in our city.

In conclusion, our city may experience all sorts of problems but it will never lose its stability and its development. The social problems the city of Cagayan de Oro is currently experiencing could contribute negative results to our society, our community, and our country, but they can also help further the development of our city and lead it to its ultimate industrialization if we all must act properly and positively to find solutions to these problems and willingly solve them. It is for us to realize what other social problems are yet unsolved. It is also our duty and obligation to cooperate with each other to solve these problems for the betterment of our city and maintain its stable glory and infallible progression. The city of Cagayan de Oro forever remains the golden city of Northern Mindanao despite all its scars.

Development in the Philippines: When Does it Happen/Occur?

Development in the Philippines: When Does it Happen/Occur?

(Written by: Jose Angelo Lorenzo S. Gomos)

There are many causes of poverty in our country today. Some of these causes are the growth of population, our mismanaged economic system, our social and cultural issues, the poor education given to the less fortunate and illiterate citizens, the endless flow of the poverty cycle, and the devastating natural disasters. We have the tendency to ask ourselves the most basic of all questions: When does development happen? When does development occur? When do people start to realize that our country needs a major improvement in terms of its political affairs, economic situation, social issues, and cultural values? When should people start to act for the change? The answer is simple – development does happen at any time and in any place. How could this be possible? Let us find it out!

There are many ways on how to develop our country. In my previous composition, I wrote about starting the change by ourselves. It is possible. But there should be an effect to it. Consequently, we need to start the change by ourselves and we need to influence others to do the same. If many people will have the change of heart to gain the eagerness, determination, motivation, and inspiration to develop our society, our community, and our country, then the development of our country is possible to happen at any time and in any place. When we all realize that change needs to be done, then we must respond to it immediately and act it out completely in cooperation with each other for all our sakes. When we all work hand in hand together, then the development of our country is possible to happen.

There were many events that happened during the timeline of our country with its rich and complex history when our ancestors worked together and gave their successful contribution for the sake of the improvement, development, and freedom of our country. Three of these were: the Philippine Revolution during the Spanish Colonization; the Philippine triumph with the aid of the American allies during the Second World War; and the most famous of all, the first People Power Revolution to abolish dictatorship in our country and to give freedom to all oppressed Filipinos. All these historical events made us proud to be Filipinos because they all were in favor for the development of our country. These events were made possible by the courage and nobility of the Filipino people who humbly and proudly participated in it. These are all famous examples of when and how the development of our country can possibly happen.

In my personal opinion, there are three stages that could contribute for our country’s development. With these three stages, people can easily attain our country’s improvement and fulfill the Filipino Dream. These are the stages of realization, cooperation, and maintenance. All these stages can create a fruitful and fulfilling effect to our country and to its citizens. These stages can even change the way people think, the way they act, and the way they give concern to our country and our fellow countrymen. These stages could even give the possibility to enhance our way of lives, manage our economic stability, alter our social situation, preserve and improve our cultural values and norms, give proper education to the less fortunate and illiterate citizens, and even break the poverty cycle and stop it from its ongoing flow.

Realization

Realization is one main thought that most people could acquire. Realization is important for our country’s progress because it involves critical thinking that would give wisdom to all who think about it. The people need to realize the current state of our country. They also need to realize what are the major problems that we have and what we are ought to contribute in order to solve it and to improve it towards its betterment. Through realization, the people will become more vigilant in the current affairs of our country and will obtain the tendency to become more observant in the country’s situation. The people will also become more involved to participate in activities that could lead our country towards its best progress and development. When people begin to realize what our country needs and what is the best way for us to improve it with our contributing efforts, our country will succeed.

Realization isn’t all about critical thinking either. It encourages people to think properly and comprehensively. It helps people understand what our country’s current state is. It makes the people more intelligent in their ways. It even helps to further our lifestyle by thinking more than the ordinary. All the problems of our country have a common root and a common cause that lead to numerous devastating effects. As citizens of our country, we must feel obligated to realize what are the problems accumulating in our country, what is their ultimate cause, what is the proper way to solve the problems, and what are some acts or doings that could improve our country for the better. Realization is the way for us to start the change in our country. The realization among the people could pave the way to the rise of our country’s better development.

Cooperation

In order for our country to grow, the citizens must actively cooperate with each other to lead it towards its greater development. How can our country achieve its greater glory and receive its fulfilling triumph when people do not cooperate with one another? Most of the time, we complain about our country’s economy, political affairs, situation under the poverty line, social and cultural views, and traditional ways. But are we contributing anything for its change? Should we just ignore our country’s problems and indulge in a comfortable lifestyle with ourselves? Should we just rely too much on the government for our country to reach its highest extent? If our country suffers terribly and will somehow become incurable and hopeless, should we just blame other people for their personal nonchalance, indecisions and undoing? If that’s what we choose to do and are currently doing, then it is sheer folly and completely devastating for our country. Our country will never develop properly when we do not cooperate with one another to start the change. When we have a full realization of the present and realistic situation of our country, then we can start to cooperate with one another in full participation for the development and for the betterment of our country. We may start with subtle things, and when we keep on cooperating with each other for the improvement of our country, chances are, our country will grow progressively and fruitfully. All we need is cooperation with our fellow Filipinos.

As a student of Development Communication, how can I cooperate with my fellow countrymen for the development of my country? I can communicate with them properly. Communication is also part of cooperation. Furthermore, it is an act of cooperation to lead our country to its development. In order for one group to cooperate properly, they must engage into appropriate and good communication to achieve their work’s fulfillment. In my course, we have numerous activities that could enhance our communication skills. Writing is one form of communication. A writer can communicate well to its reader by writing about descriptive and persuasive essays that describe the current situation of our country and persuade the reader that people can make a change with hope and determination. Photography can also be an instrument of communication. One compelling view captured by a bright flash of the camera which would eventually result into a magnificent picture could be captioned with more than a thousand words. One stunning and realistic photo that is taken in one of the many places where the problems of our country is incredibly and overwhelmingly evident, could tell a factual story about the deteriorating situation on some parts of our country and could be understood by the one looking keenly at the picture. One photo could change its viewers’ perception about our country. One photo could lead people to a belief that our country is worthy to be changed. One photo could encourage people to change their lifestyle and cooperate in making our country, our society, and our community a better place to live in. The evidence of our country’s situation could be seen and is apparent through one stellar picture.

If there is one activity in my course which excites me the most, it is the immersion. In the immersion, the students of Development Communication will receive the opportunity to experience what it is like living below the poverty line. In order for us to cooperate with one another for our country’s progress, Development Communicators must first internalize the lifestyle of the impoverished people - becoming one with them and experiencing what they are currently living. It is in this activity that one can realize the basic problems of the poor and the less fortunate and how their situation can affect our country. It is also an opportunity for us to communicate well with them, teaching them that, we, the people of the Philippines, are all equal regardless of our social status; that they too can cooperate along with our fellow countrymen for the development of our country; and that all of us must work together for good in order to attain our country’s highest extent of improvement.

Maintenance

People are usually at their best during the start of an activity and would eventually get tired of doing it afterwards. In the same case in our country, when people start to realize and cooperate somehow to make a better change for our country, and when they have started doing compassionate acts for our country’s development, they are just good at first and then they would eventually give it all up and end what they are doing because of sheer frustration and laziness. Conclusively, our country will never go forward to its success if people are doing this cycle over and again and all the time. Our country will never grow and progress if we do not finish what we are doing for it.

In order for us to break the cycle of frustration and laziness, we must maintain what we are compassionately doing in full commitment and high determination for our country.  Maintenance is also one factor and is the last stage for our country’s development. If we keep on maintaining what we do for the sake of our country and for the sake of ourselves and for our fellow countrymen, then our country will certainly grow further. Commitment can also be used for maintaining what we do best for our country. We must all be committed to maintain our righteous and virtuous acts in full realization and cooperation with each other that could eventually lead to a fruitful effect to the future of our nation.

In conclusion, it is possible for our country to start and further its development at any time and in any place if we all still obtain a thread of hope for it. When does development in the Philippines happen or occur? It can happen and occur at the same time when people start to comprehensively realize what our country is presently experiencing and what we should do to develop it further; when people start to actively cooperate with each other and to anticipate for the progression of our country; and when people maintain in full commitment and infallible determination the compassionate acts that must be done to further the development of our country. And when the development of our country is still in process, there is a high possibility that we could somehow manage to solve the common problems of our country and finally earn a way to end them. I know that one day, with our hopes high and our deeds evidently productive, our country will certainly rise to its full extent, earning worthy exultation from all its humble and proud citizens. Any time is freely available for us to start the change. We could even start the change now.

What Can I do to Affect Development in the Philippines?

What Can I do to Affect Development in the Philippines?

(Written by: Jose Angelo Lorenzo S. Gomos)

The Philippines, as we all know, is a country plunged into terrible poverty and despicable corruption. We all know that our country used to be an independent and proud republic during the 1960’s. But with the endless list of corrupt leaders who were tasked to develop our country for our own betterment, but instead absorbing much power and greed for themselves, our country has suffered from a terrible loss as of this day. Consequently, our country is hopelessly submerged into inevitable poverty, poor health systems, low quality education, old-aged technology, diminished cultures, demoralized beliefs, and ever-increasing wretched and uneducated citizens who contribute nothing but utter destruction to our country which are all caused by the foolish, unintelligible, and corrupt system of our government.

Must we really rely on the government’s power and control to uphold our country’s economic stability and future industrialization for our nation to grow from this hopeless and degraded situation? Should we still trust the government after its apparent corruption? Do we still have the concern for our country to progress for the better? The answer lies within us. For our country to change for the better, we must start within ourselves.

I myself can start the change for our country’s progression and for the betterment of its current situation. If I have to believe in something right now, I highly believe that I can start within myself and then influencing others to do the same. I can still see hope for the betterment of our country even though it is slowly regressing and declining in its current state. I can affect development in the Philippines by myself.

How can I start the change by myself? The answer is simple: I can start the change by myself through valuing and following the virtues of competence, conscience, and commitment. As I am a proud and humble Atenean, deeply rooted and educated with the Ignatian Principles, I can somehow say that by following and valuing these three simple, helpful, and meaningful virtues, I am starting to change my country for the better while encouraging others to do the same.

COMPETENCE

I am a student. That means that within the years of my studying, I crave for more knowledge and I practice what I do best as of yet – studying and learning on the way. Learning is part of one student’s life. But in order for one student to learn something and gain more knowledge, the student must first study for all the lessons in the subjects the student is taking. As a student, I am highly obligated to study and learn and equip myself with knowledge in order to become a knowledgeable and intelligent person which in turn could somehow and in some way turn me into a professional practitioner of my course in one of these days. I need to be competent in school. By valuing and following the virtue of competence, I am able to help my country by learning more of it and putting into practice what I learned. Before we need to do something to help improve our country’s current situation, we first need to observe into its current state and learn from it.

On the other hand, I believe that education is one of the primary elements of our contribution for our country’s progress. As a student, I am entitled to become determined to study hard in my lessons and influence other students to do the same by the achievements or high grades that I could attain through studying vigorously. A country with educated citizens is a country that would become prosperous and highly industrialized in the future. So I encourage students like me to take the risk in studying well in their lessons and obtain the determination to come to school everyday and educate themselves with more knowledge that could somehow help our country to reach its progress and to rise up from its degradation.

As a college student, I am taking the course of Bachelor of Science in Development Communication. How can I help the country through my course? Development Communication has a much deeper substance than what other people think about its form and essence. It is true that my course is related to journalistic writing and inclined with the media. But it is not all that. Development Communication is not just about feature writing, photography, theater and arts, and pop culture in media. Development Communication looks much deeper into the current state of the society and helps develop it for the better. That is one quality and principle that makes Development Communication far more different from other college courses related to media and feature writing. In Development Communication, students are taught about the things that concern the society including its necessities and excess, and how should we change it or contribute to it, or why should we have the need to change and develop the society including all aspects that are part of its concern and existence. As a student of Development Communication, I am fortunate enough to be equipped with the knowledge given to me by my course and the motivation it gives me to strive valiantly in competence for the development, improvement, augmentation, and enhancement of our country’s society and all that are related to it.

CONSCIENCE

As a human being, we are given the wisdom to differentiate what is right from wrong and what is wrong from right. At the same time, we are also given the courage and the free will to choose between the two aspects. One main reason why the Philippines has suffered terribly from its current situation is that Filipinos tend to choose and do the wrong actions, examples, and efforts that could make our country suffer terribly and hinder it from its progression. It is evident in the fields of politics, education, environment, and social awareness.

I.                   Politics

In the case of politics, the Filipinos tend to vote the politicians who are more famous and popular in the media even if they have not contributed anything in the country besides savoring the power, the money, the fame, and the control given to them by the government. It is much worse when the Filipino voters are foolish enough to vote for politicians who greed for power, money, and fame. The fact is that they are corrupt politicians who deceive the common masses into thinking that they are willing to lead the country towards its progress but they just steal away the people’s money, free will, and votes for their own selfish agenda and wants and are not aiming or contributing anything for the betterment of our country. They are taking advantage of the people’s ignorance. This is one realization I have when it comes to our government and our politics. The citizens of our country could sometimes do the wrong efforts and choose the wrong choice of leaders for our country’s progress. If I could gain the accessibility and possibility to vote when I reach the proper and right age, I would choose a much wiser and compassionate leader or candidate who could do his job justly and righteously in leading our country’s development. I have to be conscientious enough to become more aware of our politicians’ doing and undoing – whether they are politically handling our country with courageous leadership and compassionate care towards the masses or whether they just lounge around in their offices wearing expensive suits, breathing comfortably the air of power, wealth, and fame. I need to listen to my conscience and rely on my wisdom and knowledge in voting wisely for the politician who can start a progressive rule and begin an effective development for our country.  We may not have to rely too much on the government, but we still are obligated to vote. It is our right as citizens of this country to vote wisely.

II.                Education

We have observed that our country is plunged into poverty. There are more impoverished communities in our country and the number of people victimized by poverty is currently increasing and evermore multiplying. So, what’s the problem with numerous impoverished people in the country? The answer is that they have no complete access to a highly standardized education. With an ever-growing population of people in the impoverished communities, the literacy rate among the people is also slowly decreasing within the country. In the rural areas, it is an evident fact that most people have less chances of being educated or that they have no chances of gaining education at all. Based on a recent survey conducted in the rural areas, there is only one teacher to teach for one hundred and five students. Now that is one of the basic problems our country has. The educational system is low while the impoverished people are becoming all the more illiterate because of having low accessibility to receive education.

As a student, longing for more knowledge, I feel that it is unfair for the people in the rural areas to receive low chances of becoming educated. Education is one factor that could develop our country for its betterment. But how can our country develop properly when there is an ever-increasing number of illiterate people? If I could contribute something to this problem, I should act things out. There are plenty of organizations and groups that help educate illiterate people (of which most of them are children) in Xavier University. I plan to join in any of them because I want to contribute something in our country’s development by helping other people to learn, even if it is just reading and writing. To start with, I am taking the subject named, NSTP (an abbreviation for National Service Training Program) during this semester which has some available activities to venture into impoverished areas and teach those who are illiterate and are less fortunate with even the most basic kinds of learning like reading and writing. I believe that by participating in activities such as this, I can do something to affect development in my country. It is part of my conscience telling me to help educate people, particularly the less fortunate ones, and bring them to the glory of knowledge.

III.             Environment

The environment in our country supposedly helps beautify our surroundings and elevate the health and wellness of the citizens living in it as well as lengthening the longevity of their lives. But as much as our country has not fully progressed yet, our environment is slowly getting affected by it. Since there are less educated citizens in our country as well as most of the Filipinos tend to become unaware and ignore the common problem, the cleanliness and the abundance of our environment is slowly declining and fading away. People tend to commute with transportation vehicles that produce much smoke that would eventually harm our environment. Mindless people with abhorrent vices smoke cigarettes for the sake of their pleasure and addiction which would obviously cause damage to the environment and their health as well. And ignorant and lazy people tend to throw their garbage and trashes everywhere in our surroundings which would extremely and definitely make our environment dirty, unclean, and unsanitary. That is why most places in our country are already polluted and are harmful to one’s own health. The environment in our country is important for our country’s progress.

Cleanliness is next to godliness. That is a statement that we, the Filipino people, should always remember. When the environment of our country is clean, there will be fewer chances of people getting sick. When we have a clean environment, our economy would rise up as people from foreign places would think that our country is a good place to visit or to live in with a clean surrounding and a harmless environment. As a youth, I can help maintain our environment clean by starting within myself. I should reuse, reduce, and recycle. That is, if there are items that are not yet worthy to be disposed, I will reuse them (one example is turning a grocery plastic bag into a trash bag). I will reduce using unnecessary items that could be harmful to our environment (one example is using the environmental-friendly bag SM offers for shopping instead of new plastic bags). I will recycle recyclable things (one example is to use some used sheets as my solution papers in Math). Part of my conscience tells me to do these helpful things for the sake of our environment’s well-being. Part of it also tells me to join in any organizations that will sustain and maintain our environment’s existence and enhancing it as well (examples are: joining in any groups or organizations that plant trees on barren waste lands in the country, joining some marathon to help maintain our environment’s cleanliness, and joining in any clubs that could help clean the river from its random floating trashes). I will also encourage others to do the same.

IV.             Social Awareness

Being socially aware is one thing every people should become inclined to. It is important because we are all part of the society and we all need to work hand in hand for its development. I need to be more observant and aware socially. Whenever I see an elderly person cross the street, I will accompany him in crossing it. Whenever a beggar would ask me money, I will give him food instead, if I have any with me. Whenever a friend is in need of my help, I will give him all the help I can possibly give (except in financial terms). When there is a problem that arises in our society, since we are all part of the society, we need to solve it together and formulate a perfect solution to end the problem and improve our society’s welfare.

Since I am valuing and following the virtue of conscience, I should become more socially aware within the society. It is also one way to help develop our country. In the society, my conscience helps me determine what is right from wrong and what is wrong from right. It helps me understand that I am part of the society and whatever happens in it, I will be affected by it too. In order for me to affect change for my country, I must start to change my actions, belief, and attitude within and towards the society. In order to make this possible, I need to become socially aware.

My conscience is my guide for my moral uprightness. This is one reason why I value and follow this special virtue. It helps me to become morally accurate and virtuously correct. If I need to affect development in the Philippines, I would certainly start with myself by listening to my conscience, using it as my guide for all my doings.

COMMITMENT

In order for me to change my country by starting with myself, I am obliged to commit myself to all the tasks I mentioned above in order to fulfill them. My commitment towards these things is somehow not an easy virtue to follow because at times, since I am only human, I can unknowingly do mistakes and will tend not to follow any of my promises that are listed above. But since I love my country, because it is the land of my birth, I will try to commit myself in doing all the tasks of which I should do to affect development in my country. I am loyal and faithful to my country and I will commit myself in volunteering to start its development and its change for the better.

Our country is in dire need of citizens who are devoted in developing it for its betterment and its progression. That is what our country basically needs right now, knowing its current and poor state. But I certainly hope that our country has a better future from its present situation. If we all exert our own effort, our country could be lead and maintained into a better welfare, where it gives joy, hope, and peace to all its citizens. I can start the change with myself. I will try to fulfill all of the things that I mentioned above. I can be a man for others, serving others before I serve myself. I can humbly and proudly endeavor to affect development in our country and I can encourage and influence others to do the same.
